Orthopedic Rehabilitation Massage is the preferred form of bodywork in the current mainstream health care community. This type of massage is indicated for post-surgery, chronic pain, overuse and repetitive stress injuries. It compliments treatments by physical therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, osteopaths and MDs.

This style of bodywork requires more training from therapists specifically in the areas of anatomy, physiology and pathology of injury. Here at MIDLINE we are constantly increasing our understaning of how to address pathology using Soft-Tissue Techniques. Ongoing education is required for all active Therapists.

Orthopedic Massage (OM) is a form of manual therapy that specializes in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. In addition to the benefits of traditional massage such as relaxation and increased circulation, OM has several other treatment goals. These include increasing range of motion, decreasing and managing pain, and normalizing musculoskeletal function.

The therapist works to dissolve adhesions in muscle and connective tissue, lengthen connective tissue, balance muscle function by strengthening weak muscles and releasing tight ones, normalize the position of soft tissue, restore joint function, release entrapped nerves, and facilitate normal neurological function.

What to Expect from Orthopedic Massage

A session typically lasts one hour. The work is both gentle and deep and consists of massage strokes and joint mobilization. During the course of a session the therapist may work specifically into an area of trauma to increase fluidity and range-of-motion. The therapist will then take the intention to the greater body and how the body as a whole is responding to the injury. This may involve active stretching and excercises specific to increasing overall health through the system. The client is asked to wear comfortable exercise shorts, as they will also be engaging in specific muscle movements.
